Researchers Have Come Up With A Drug Cocktail That Lengthens Lifespan!

"A team of researchers led by Principal Investigator Dr. Jan Gruber from Yale-NUS College has discovered a combination of pharmaceutical drugs that not only increases healthy lifespan in the microscopic worm Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), but also delays the rate of ageing in them, a finding that could someday mean longer, healthier lives for humans. Most Diets Are Deficient In What One Researcher Calls "Longevity Vitamins"!

"A detailed new review of nutritional science argues that most American diets are deficient in a key class of vitamins and minerals that play previously unrecognized roles in promoting longevity and in staving off chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and, potentially, neurodegeneration. "

Depression And Childhood Trauma Can Make You Age Faster!

"  A new study has found that people living with major depressive disorder are biologically older than people without depression, and that childhood trauma exacerbates this effect. The results illuminate the epigenetic mechanisms that might explain this discrepancy." Read article...

Researchers Have Found Chemical In Fruits And Vegetables Slows Aging!

" Previous research published earlier this year in Nature Medicine involving University of Minnesota Medical School faculty Paul D. Robbins and Laura J. Niedernhofer and Mayo Clinic investigators James L. Kirkland and Tamara Tchkonia, showed it was possible to reduce the burden of damaged cells, termed senescent cells, and extend lifespan and improve health, even when treatment was initiated late in life. They now have shown that treatment of aged mice with the natural product Fisetin, found in many fruits and vegetables, also has significant positive effects on health and lifespan." Read more...

Dietary Fiber May Prevent Aging Complications In The Brain!

"As mammals age, immune cells in the brain known as microglia become chronically inflamed. In this state, they produce chemicals known to impair cognitive and motor function. That's one explanation for why memory fades and other brain functions decline during old age. But, according to a new study from the University of Illinois, there may be a remedy to delay the inevitable: dietary fiber. " Read more...

Exercise Slows Heart Aging!

"Your heart, like any other muscle, can weaken over time, especially if you are sedentary. As you age and become less active, the muscle in your heart's left ventricle — the chamber that pumps oxygen-rich blood back out to the body — becomes stiffer." Read more...

Oxidative Stress, Nrf2 and Aging in Environmental Illness!

Next what I want to talk about is aging in environmental illness. I do not think anyone really talks about it but we know that aging is inevitable. Unfortunately, toxic environmental exposures make us age faster. Therefore, one can assume that people with environmental illnesses age faster. Like I said, it is not talked about much in the literature and probably most environmental illness patients do not want to admit.

So why would environmental exposures age us faster? Again, we can learn a lot about it through the study of the Nrf2. The inhibition of which causes oxidative stress. We now know that many diseases of aging are caused by oxidative stress. This includes diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Experts suspect that this is due to the decline in mitochondrial function and exposures to toxicants increase dysfunction. Alternatively, there is a natural decline of Nrf2 as we age. One study compared Nrf2 levels in young and older adults in bronchial cells.   It was determined that basal levels of Nrf2 are lower in the cells of older adults even though the expression of Nrf2-regulated genes, that are responsible for glutathione synthesis, was higher. In addition, the levels of Nrf2, activated by sulphoraphane (an activator of the Nrf2) was significantly lower in older participants. The researchers also noted that the suppressors of Nrf2, Bach1 and c-Myc, were higher in cells of older adults. (1)

Is Fiber the Key to Good Aging?

Findings from a new study that followed older adults for 10 years supports the idea that eating a diet rich in fiber - such as found in breads, cereals, and fruits - is key to aging successfully; that is, reaching old age free of disease and disability.

Immune Response To Flu May Be Why The Elderly Get So Sick With It!

Death from influenza virus in older people may be primarily caused by a damaging immune response to flu and not by the virus itself, new research suggests. The insight could lead to novel strategies for combating flu in the most vulnerable patients, said the researchers.

Calorie Restriction Results In Longer Lifespan and Healthier Aging!

Limitation of calorie intake by 20-30% compared to usual intake was found to significantly extend the life of rodents, yeast, C. elegans, D. melanogaster, and potentially primates . In mammals, such a diet was also found to lower the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer, inflammation, and neurodegenerative diseases .
