Loss Of Certain Gut Bacteria May Lead To Diabetes As We Age!



Losing one variety of gut bacteria may lead to type 2 diabetes as people age.

Old mice have less Akkermansia muciniphila bacteria than young mice do, researchers report November 14 in Science Translational Medicine. That loss triggers inflammation, which eventually leads cells to ignore signals from the hormone insulin. Such disregard for insulin’s message to take in glucose is known as insulin resistance and is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes. Read more...

Inflammation Starts in the Gut! Kick the High Fat Diet Habit!







In other posts, I have noted that one way to reduce the effects of environmental illnesses is to maintain a healthy diet that is low in fat. The main reasons for this is that high fat diets (HFD) 1) lead to dysbiosis. In other words, an unhealthy gut full of unhealthy gut bacteria and 2) HFD leads to obesity, more oxidative stress and inflammation that can lead to diabetes. (1-2)  Of course, since many patients with environmental illnesses already have higher oxidative stress. Anything that increases it is just going to make symptoms worse.

According to one recent study out of Chicago, researchers demonstrated that a HFD alters gut bacteria that makes fat gain easier. What they found is that "germ free" mice did not gain weight even when fed a HFD. On the other hand, mice with a "normal intestinal environment" and fed a HFD had an increase in bacteria that alter fat absorption and a decrease in bacteria linked to leanness. (3)

Berries Improve Gut Health and are Protective Against Neuroinflammation!





Experts believe that gut dysbiosis is a cause of environmental illness. Changes in the gut biome can be caused by antibiotic use, environmental insults from chemicals in food and water and high fat and high sugar diets. These changes lead to morphological changes in the wall of the intestines that allows for easier translocation of harmful bacteria. It is believed that translocation may be one significant cause of chronic fatigue syndrome. In addition, it is believed that dysbiosis may lead to neuroinflammation that is believed to be a major source of symptoms in chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.

Numerous studies published in the recent past have shown that consumption of some fruits and herbs may improve gut health. Research has demonstrated that anthocyanins in berries may counteract dysbiosis. In addition, they also have anti-neuroinflammatory properties and allow for better communication between the gut and the brain. Lastly, they alter tryptophan metabolism increasing the neuroprotective metabolite kynurenic acid. (1) Incidentally, this pathway also produces the antioxidant 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid which inhibits inflammatory proteins by activating Nrf2. (2)

Compound Found In Breast and Cows Milk Neccessary for Neonates Gut Microbiome!

 
Researchers have pinpointed the compound in breast milk that supplies the nourishment needed for the development of a neonates' gut microbiota, and they have shown that it can be obtained from cow's milk. The findings are published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

Gut Microbiome May Determine Effects of Malnutrition!

 
A new study has determined that the state of malnutrition, which is a condition that occurs across populations, may be influenced by the microbiome.  In a series of experiments, a researchers took samples from healthy children and transferred them to mice. These mice developed normally and did not show any signs of stunting which is a common condition caused from malnutrition. Alternatively, fecal samples from stunted children were transferred to germ free mice. Interestingly, these mice develop slow growth and stunting like the children the samples came from. The conclusion from this study is that the species of bacteria that make up the microbiome contribute to the effects of malnutrition. It is assumed that nutritious foods can be made with the healthy bacteria species and may one day help prevent the long-term effects of malnutrition.

Brain Chemical Made in the Gut Linked to Emotion and Depression!



Serotonin is probably best known as a brain chemical that affects emotions and behavior, an imbalance of which is thought to contribute to depression. Less well-known is that scientists estimate 90% of serotonin is made in the gut, and imbalances in this peripheral serotonin have been linked to diseases ranging from irritable bowel syndrome and cardiovascular disease, to osteoporosis.

Kimchi Changes Balance of Bacteria in the Gut!






While I am not gonna jump on the bandwagon for this one, I thought I would note it because it shows how diet can influence gut health!

Cheese is Good For Your Gut Microbiome!







In the study, researchers examined urine and fecal samples from 15 healthy men. Half of them ate cheese and milk in their diets, while the other half ate a control diet with butter, but no other dairy products. The researchers found that the participants who ate cheese had higher levels of butyrate in their fecal matter — a product of gut bacteria that is often associated with a reduction in cholesterol. As a result, the authors argue, high levels of cheese — despite its fatty content — could actually benefit you, and perhaps all saturated fats aren’t bad.
