Study Identifies Several Adulterants in Numerous Weight Loss Products!

A recent study determined that 56% of a sampling of 164 food supplements for weight loss contained active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). These adulterants ranged from pharmaceuticals that have been taken off the market because of toxicity to antidepressants. According to the results of this study, it is obvious the poor manufacturing processes for weight loss supplements and the need for better quality control.

Study Questions Cardiovascular Benefits of Nordic Diet!

"Although individual components of a healthy so-called Nordic diet previously have been linked to beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, as well as to other health effects, there is no evidence of an association with cardiovascular events in a general population, a study concludes. Losing Weight is a Matter of Biology!

"For the first time in a lab, researchers have found evidence supporting the commonly held belief that people with certain physiologies lose less weight than others when limiting calories. At this time, researchers do not know whether the biological differences are innate or develop over time."

Tomato Juice May Reduce Inflammation and Lower Cholesterol!

Tomatoes are an important part of the Mediterranean diet and contain large amounts of lycopene and other polyphenols. A recent study was designed to find out how a diet supplemented daily with tomato juice would impact waist size and inflammatory adipokines. The result of the study showed improvements in cholesterol, reducing inflammatory  MCP-1, reduction in body weight and BMI and other health-related measurements. There was a significant increase in lycopene, triglycerides and adiponectin. The author's concluded that tomato juice can reduce weight circumference, inflammatory adipokines and  cholesterol in young women and these changes were independent of changes in body fat!

Mediterranean Diet May Improve Symptoms of Depression!

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a protein that is found in the "brain and the periphery neural system". It has many functions which include stimulating the new neural growth of neurons and synapses, important for long-term memory, controls neurogenesis,  and coordinates responses to enriched environments etc. The upregulation or downregulation of BDNF has also been linked to numerous diseases such as depression, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and Alzheimer's. (Wikipedia 1) Just to name a few!
A recent study has shown for the first time that diet affects the levels of BDNF in the brain.  In the study, 243 participants were divided into 3 groups according to intervention diet. The three diets included the control low-fat diet, the Mediterranean diet supplemented with virgin olive oil and the Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts. The goal of the study was to find out if the different diets produced an association of low levels of BDNF.  The results showed a significant lower risk of low BDNF levels from the Mediterranean diet with nuts compared to the control group. In addition, in individuals with depression significantly higher levels of BDNF were found in the Mediterranean with the nuts group. From the results, the researchers concluded that a Mediterranean diet with nuts is associated with improved levels of BDNF in individuals with depression. (Sanchez-Villegas 2)
