"A recent study reported something very impressive: A decade after the end of a randomized clinical trial, the benefits of dietary supplementation not only persisted, but seemed to be getting bigger. So why are we not talking about this more? "Read more...

Don't Be Taken In! Nrf2 Activator Supplements May Not Be Safe!

Over the past several years, I have written about how I believe that Nrf2 depletion might be a cause of environmental illnesses that present with high levels of environmental stress. I also have mentioned how foods that contain sulforaphane, quercetin, EGCG and others might help to normalize Nrf2 levels. That being said, I do not endorse Nrf2 Activator supplements unless prescribed by a physician that actually knows what he or she is doing. There are many activators on the supplement market. These are not regulated by the FDA and therefore, I do not believe they are considered safe until more research is done on their effectiveness. Low levels of Nrf2 production can lead to disease but so can, having an continual overexpression of Nrf2. Bruns writes, "previous work suggests that Nrf2 activators induce the Nrf2 transcriptional program in some cell types, but not others, demonstrating that cell and tissue types respond quite differently to Nrf2 activators. Varying metabolic demands between tissues may be responsible for tissue-specific Nrf2 activity, or inherent properties of the tissue, such as expression of Nrf2 activators/inhibitors."  (1)

Should You Take Supplements While Working Out?

"Ah, one of the most common questions I'm asked when a new client starts up with me: "Should I take any supplements now that I"m working out?" With the supplement industry raking in tens of billions of dollars annually, one would think that there must be at least SOME brand or SOME type of supplement one should take to enhance one's performance in the gym."

Study Identifies Several Adulterants in Numerous Weight Loss Products!

A recent study determined that 56% of a sampling of 164 food supplements for weight loss contained active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). These adulterants ranged from pharmaceuticals that have been taken off the market because of toxicity to antidepressants. According to the results of this study, it is obvious the poor manufacturing processes for weight loss supplements and the need for better quality control.

Most Herbal Supplement Claims Are Bogus!

“There may be evidence that some botanicals in their pure state have medicinal effects,” Cohen says. “But consumers need to realize that what they’re purchasing in a bottle is completely different from what an ancient herbalist would have used, making it extremely unlikely that these highly processed products are going to confer any of the theoretical health benefits—even if they’re made from the plants they say they are.”

Polyphenols In Whole Foods Work Together!

Research has not demonstrated a very positive effect with supplements of polyphenols. This study shows that the most benefit of polyphenols for cancer prevention and oxidative stress reduction comes from them working together. Their benefits are more potent together compared to their activity individually!
