Fish oil supplementation makes no difference to muscle growth in healthy, young men who weight train with whey protein, a study has concluded.
A research team has found that that olive oil and fish oil may prevent muscle breakdown in response to air pollution. In addition, preliminary finding show that fish oil may protect against higher cholesterol levels caused by air pollution.
A recent study shows an association between oxidative stress biomarkers and depression. It was also demonstrated that in those with depression they had lower levels of omega 3 fatty acids. Oxidative stress is a state where there is an imbalance between reactive oxygen species from cellular metabolism and the ability to detoxify the intermediates or repair the damage. From the results of this study, it was concluded that oxidative stress levels may be used to determine who would benefit from omega 3 for depression.

There is insufficient evidence for a secondary preventive effect of omega-3 fatty acid supplements against overall cardiovascular events among patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, according to new research. However industry has said the analysis of previous study is ‘limited’ and ‘inaccurate’.

But what does the science say? A systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, highlighted in my video Is Fish Oil Just Snake Oil? looked at all the best “randomized clinical trials evaluating the effects of omega-3’s on lifespan, cardiac death, sudden death, heart attack, and stroke.” The studies told the subjects to either eat more oily fish or to take fish oil capsules. What did the study find? Overall, the researchers found no protective benefit for all-cause mortality, heart disease mortality, sudden cardiac death, heart attack, or stroke.
