Loss Of Certain Gut Bacteria May Lead To Diabetes As We Age!

Losing one variety of gut bacteria may lead to type 2 diabetes as people age.

Old mice have less Akkermansia muciniphila bacteria than young mice do, researchers report November 14 in Science Translational Medicine. That loss triggers inflammation, which eventually leads cells to ignore signals from the hormone insulin. Such disregard for insulin’s message to take in glucose is known as insulin resistance and is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes. Read more...

Endometriosis And Oral Contraceptives Linked To Asthma!

The evidence linking sex hormones and asthma continues to grow, thanks to research funded by a grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for Joe Zein, MD, staff in the Respiratory Institute. His latest research, presented at the 2018 American Thoracic Society International Conference, shows that oral contraceptive use and endometriosis are associated with a higher risk of lifetime asthma in women of reproductive age. Read more...

Inhibiting One Protein Gets Rid Of Brain Toxic Clumps In Parkinson's!

A defining feature of Parkinson's disease is the clumps of alpha-synuclein protein that accumulate in the brain's motor control area, destroying dopamine-producing neurons. Natural processes can't clear these clusters, known as Lewy bodies, and no one has demonstrated how to stop the build up as well as breakdown of the clumps—until perhaps now. Read more...

Weight Loss Can "Fix" Diabetes In Some People!

"In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas does not make enough insulin, which is the hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels. Until recently, it was believed that diabetes lasts for life, but a new trial suggested that weight loss can send diabetes into remission. Researchers may now have learned why this happens." Read more...

Autism And Zinc Deficiency Early In Life Link Researcher's Say!

The emergence of autism in children has not only been linked to genes encoding synaptic proteins—among others—but also environmental insults such as zinc deficiency. Although it is unclear whether zinc deficiency contributes to autism, scientists have now defined in detail a possible mechanistic link. Their research shows how zinc shapes the connections or 'synapses' between brain cells that form during early development, via a complex molecular machinery encoded by autism risk genes.
